I'm writing this entry so I can link the word "blingosphere," which is my new favorite word.
I've always hated the term "bling bling," currently being over-used in pop culture. Here's a hint, for those of you following trends. When a middle-aged white woman uses your slang on Project Runway, it's over. At this point, your phrase has been milked clean of "street cred" and is simply another tired accessory to be misused by middle-aged white people.
"Bling bling" is OVER. You hear me? OVER. Stop using it NOW!
I know what you're thinking. How can I object to "bling bling" and embrace the term, "blingosphere?"
Easy. "Bling bling" is a phrase hijacked from black culture and press-ganged into white culture. "Blingosphere" is an ironic mockery of the original slang -- a term so lame that it declares whiteness on its face. Thus, while the original term carries the lameness of white people trying to talk black, the new term is an ironic mockery of that process, and is thus, reverse-cool.
For other examples of reverse-cool, please see the works of William Shatner.
Hope This Helps
Also, while I'm on the subject, let me say this again. White people need to stop quoting Chris Rock. NOW. You can quote the relationship stuff if you want, but white people need to stop quoting his Black People vs. N*ggers thing. It's the bit that made him famous, and the instant he did it, every white racist in the world started using it as an excuse.
"I'm not racist, I'm like Chris Rock! I don't hate black people, I hate n*ggers!"
How many times do I have to explain this? It's acceptable to make fun of people in a group as long as you are part of that group, but when an outside force starts using inside jokes, they are appropriating credibility that they did not earn.
