The festive season is upon us and here is a special early Christmas treat for you. Recently a friend of mine told me of a gem he stumbled across, an old BBC TV series from the late 70ies or early 80ies called ‘Caught on a Train’. From what he remembered it was a story about the adventures of some passengers on a train from Ostende to some German destinations. Also on board: a bunch of German football supporters, presumably returning from a European Cup game in England (or from somewhere on the way).
Now here’s the beauty of it: These supporters are Eintracht Frankfurt fans!!!
We did some research and ended up finding the exact episode on youtube.com (see links below). Throughout the programme you can see Frankfurt supporters in the classic 80ies fan clothing interact with the main characters of the story, singing their songs, waving Eintracht flags, drinking and having fun. A great watch for every true Eagle!
We believe this might have been filmed during the return trip of the fans that went to the Cup Winners Cup semi final second leg away to West Ham United. This was played on 14th of April 1976 (we lost 1-3 and having won the first leg 2-1 missed the final on aggregate). Maybe it was filmed later but had been inspired by the joyous and cheerful Eintracht fans after the original game? The release or original air date was in October 1980 though the series ‘BBC2 Playhouse’ (which this episode was part of) existed since 1974.
We’ll do some more research on that and I will also contact the BBC to find out more and maybe get the footage on DVD. In the mean time I’d like to invite everyone who has any good stories, anecdotes, information or experience around that classic fixture against West Ham United to email me with whatever it might be – depending on the response we will publish the best stories at a later stage in the English newsletter. If you even might have some background info about ‘Caught on a Train’ please email me also! Any hint appreciated!
